roma: vatican city.

(Start with the post right before this one for day one of my trip to Rome last weekend.)

After some debate about the appropriate time to get up and at ‘em the night before, we gathered for breakfast on Saturday morning and hopped on the metro to visit Vatican City. First, though, we stopped at the Spanish Steps, took a look around, and then walked through an awesome park to the next Metro station.

This is from the top of the steps. I’m actually not really sure what is so special about these steps, except for the number of tourists taking photos of the steps, the area around the steps, and themselves using them.

I’m a creeper. I’ll admit it. I have a million pictures of people I don’t know from Adam on my harddrive. I just think they’re really interesting.

case in point.

…again. I also really like black and white (you might have noticed).

Rome is really pretty… I think I might have mentioned this at least once yesterday. maybe.

This guy was in the park with a whole bunch of other busts of important people, but this one made me especially happy. I love intelligent graffiti… there’s something just so ironic about it (this wasn’t me, I swear).

There was a wedding as we walked through the Piazza del Popolo on our way to the metro to get to Vatican City! We referred to it as “the mafia wedding” for the rest of the weekend.

Vatican City! This is my friend Will standing in St. Peter’s Square in front of the Basilica.

This is me in Will’s sunglasses in front of the Basilica. (Yes, I did put this up here already, but it’s just SO COOL. My middle name is Humility, which really suits me, I think.)

Inside the Basilica. It was very ornate and beautiful, and maybe a tad overdone… but what else can you expect from the heart of the faith that has brought us so many beautiful churches?

It really was awfully gorgeous. Look at that light! That window placement wasn’t a mistake (maybe because Michelangelo was the architect).

We went to the Vatican Museums after we left the Basilica (and Max didn’t try to hide his knife and get kicked out of the line to get in this time, either).

The amount of art housed in Vatican City is really staggering. So many famous pieces that even I recognized were all over the place in here, not to mention Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel.

Everything was like, so so pretty (and I’m extremely eloquent, obvs).

After the Vatican, we headed to some fountains, ate some dinner, and walked home. For those pictures, check out the flickr set!

I’d put them up tomorrow, but I’m going to the Czeck Republic.

No big.
